Are the Freedom Convoy Warriors Ready for a Real Fight?

Remember the Freedom Convoy? That group of self-proclaimed freedom defenders who invaded Ottawa in early 2022—not to protect democracy or battle foreign threats, but to fight  masks and vaccines. To insist on their God-given right to freedom (whatever that meant). Now that’s wshat I call a brave stand! But when Canada’s sovereignty faces actual challenges from our friends to the South, are these “freedom warriors” ready to step up? Or was honking horns in the capital the height of their courage?

The Real Border Battle

Donald Trump is “joking” about Canada being America’s 51st state . Though he probably said it between chomping on Big Macs and golf swings, I can’t forget that he’s the guy who tried to build a wall between the US and Mexico and almost started trade wars with his allies. If there was ever a time for a convoy to roll up to a border, now’s the time when Trump is talking about erasing it.

So, where are our freedom-loving, patriotic truckers now? After their weeks-long blockade in Ottawa and Windsor, you’d think they’d be rushing to defend Canada’s borders against  real threats. But strangely, the honks have gone silent. A real battle isn’t very appealing if it doesn’t come with hot tubs and bouncy castles.

From Freedom Fighters to Fairweather Protesters

The Ottawa conflict was a masterclass in disruptive theater. They disrupted the lives of ordinary Canadians, while confidently presuming to  speak for everyone . They jammed streets, crapped in stairwells, lived in their trucks, made noise 24/7, and claimed to be “fighting for freedom.” But from what? Masks? Public health policies? We can all agree it wasn’t exactly the War of 1812. But when it comes to protecting Canada from serious threats—like, say, being absorbed by a power-hungry neighbour—these brave warriors are suddenly nowhere to be found.

Heroes or Houdinis?

What about the Convoy’s figureheads? Romana Didulo, self-proclaimed Queen of Canada? She’s now settled in a former school in Richmond, Saskatchewan, with a group of her followers, to the dismay of the townspeople. Tamara Lich, the heroic Joan of Arc of the movement, now seems more focused on rocking out with her band than rallying for Canada’s sovereignty. Because nothing screams “freedom fighter” like strumming a guitar while the borders remain unguarded. And Pat King? Finally, his silence is golden—maybe even more valuable than his contributions to the cause. Are they tuning up for a freedom anthem, or was their “fight” always just a gig to rake in GoFundMe cash and a bit of notoriety? Turns out, the battle for Canada’s soul takes a backseat when there’s a drum solo to be played.

Time to Put Up or Shut Up

If this movement was about real freedom, why aren’t they back at the Detroit border, ready to confront talk of Canada losing its independence? Trump’s inauguration is right around the corner on Martin Luther King day, but so far… crickets.

Where’s the outrage when someone like Trump jokes about turning us into a U.S. state? Or is their “fight for freedom” only effective when the enemy is a mask mandate, and the risk for most is a parking ticket?

The Convoy’s version of bravery has always looked less like standing up to tyranny and more like a frat party with flags. If the freedom fighters were ever serious about protecting Canada, this would be the time to show it. But somehow, I doubt we’ll see the Convoy anywhere near a real border fight. Their idea of a battle is as flimsy as their grasp on what freedom actually means.

I didn’t respect them in 2022, and I don’t respect them now.
